The final weekend of January was highlighted by the DUI arrest of Justin Bieber when he got all Fast and Furious in South Beach. While Bronco fans eagerly await the Super Bowl, we had several races in Colorado, including two races that offered up some nice cash purses which drew out the speedy runners.

The Denver Parks and Recreation have spoken and there will be no NEW run/race/walk or bikes rides in 2014. The website doesn't really state the reason why, only that "it's necessary in order for the city to provide the best possible experience for those recurring events we currently permit on an annual basis." I have no idea what that means.

What I do know is that if you put on a race in 2013 in Denver, this will reduce your competition. Races come and go and the number of races that were being put on in the Denver parks were numerous, which begs the question were they too numerous?

Omaha! Omaha! The Broncos are heading to Super Bowl XLVIII in "New York" with Denver being a 2.5 point favorite according to the sharks in Vegas. The weather in Colorado was prime for racing this past weekend, thus we saw some great local action and the elite runners headed south to warmer climates to run in the marquee races, namely the US Half Marathon Championships which was held in Houston. It was the third weekend in January, 2014 and did I mention the Broncos are headed to the Super Bowl!?

Chris Christie likes to slow down traffic in New Jersey, while Tom Brady and the Patriots are the only ones standing in the way of the Broncos making their way to Jersey.

The racing action was light, but Newton Team Elite was in full force at the Oatmeal 5K in Lafayette, recap below. It was the second weekend of January, 2014.

Tim Noakes is a South African professor of exercise and sports science at the University of Cape Town. Professor Noakes wrote the "Lore of Running" in 1986, which is often called the "runner's bible." He then took on the sports drink industry in his book "Waterlogged" and in 2012 he challenged the idea that runners needed a high carbohydrate diet, and now advocates a low carbohydrate/high fat diet.

I've always wanted a pair of glow in the dark shoes and New Balance has answered my prayers. New Balance says it's to "improve runner safety", I say it gets people talking. If you're looking for a shoe to take out on a midnight run, with some glow sticks swinging wildly in your arms, all while cranking some Avicii on your iPod, these are the shoes for you. The color schemes remind me of something that the U of Oregon would pull on their football uniforms.

Zach Bitter ran 100 miles in 11:47:11, breaking the U.S. 100 Mile Open Track record. Zach ran his 100 miles at 7:04 per mile pace, incredible. I'm not sure which would be harder, running 7:04 pace for 100 miles, or the mental challenge of running around a track 400 times.

The big race of the weekend was in Bend, Oregon, which was host to the USATF National Club Cross Country Championships. The Boulder Running Company/adidas women finished in second place, while Hudson Training System (HTS) Elite women took third place. The Boulder Running Company/adidas men's team finished in seventh place. It was the third weekend of December 2013.

Legions of Colorado runners will make their way to the west coast this weekend for the Saturday's USATF National Club Cross Country Championships. This year's course, designed by trail and mountain running great Max King, is projected to be a far cry from the more common groomed-golf-course-grass-track style cross country courses typical at many races, in an effort to bring cross country back to a more European style featuring more difficult terrain. But the course, combined with the over 3,000 feet of altitude in Bend, Oregon, will hopefully tend to favor runners out of Colorado.

Matt Prater set an NFL record by kicking a 64 yard field goal, Wes Welker got his second concussion in four games and CU beat number six Kansas on a last second three pointer. It was the second weekend of December and the state was frozen over with temperatures only reaching the teens.

Well I hope you were watching that final second of the Auburn Vs. Alabama game, that had to be one of the greatest endings in sports history. The Denver Broncos took down the Chiefs, who now have an overall record of 9-3, but are 1-3 in their own division. It was the last weekend of November and the first weekend of December, the racing action was light due to the numerous Thanksgiving Day races, but we have a couple to tell you about.

Thousands of Colorado runners toed the line on Thanksgiving Day, a day that saw perfect running weather. We had one of the top high school runners in the country racing and a college kid dressed in a Flash costume running a 15:29 5K. Personally, I like that Flash wears a RoadID bracelet on his right arm, safety first kids! Read below for a recap of races across the Centennial State.

Four weeks ago Boulder-based Newton Running launched a new trail shoe- the BoCo AT (Boulder Colorado All Terrain). Only Newton’s second-ever trail offering, this shoe follows the Terra Momentum and will eventually replace it as the only trail shoe in Newton’s line. I got myself a pair of the BoCo ATs very quickly after they were available, anxious to try out a shoe which takes its name from Boulder on the trails of Boulder.

I'd rather not talk about that Broncos loss last night, so we will start with a positive. The University of Colorado won the NCAA cross-country title on Saturday, their fourth under coach Mark Wetmore since 2001. The Buff entered the race ranked third and defeated No 1. Northern Arizona, 149 points to 169. The CU women's team finished seventh overall with 265 points.

Adams State continued their D2 dominance, winning their fifth national championship in the past six years. The Adams State women's team took second, while Western State finished in third. It was the fourth weekend of November and we have a few races to recap.

Normally it takes runners a few stabs at running 26.2 miles before they figure the marathon out, but not Malia Mullen. The Edgewater resident ran the Atlanta Marathon in October, her first, and won the race in 2:54:52.

For this great performance, we are awarding Malia the title of Mizuno/Boulder Running Company/RunColo, runner of the month. Thanks to Mizuno and BRC, Malia will pick up a free pair of Mizunos.
