Released in August of 2013, "Sports Gene" is one of my favorite books that I have read in the last few years and easily the most interesting and educational. "The Sports Gene" is a fascinating look at the role genes play within sports. Why do NBA players have absurd wingspans, why does Michael Phelps at 6'4" buy pants with a 32" inseam which is shorter than those worn by 5'9" Hicham El Guerrouj. All of these topics and more are covered in David Epstein's book, so it was a pleasure to get to sit down and speak with him for 80 minutes.

Is it possible that Mother's Day weekend is a more popular race weekend than Father's Day? Although mid-May brought several Mother's Day races to town, trail and ultra racing dominates this weekend's recap with high-profile racing around the globe. Other links from the past week to share include Running Times' "Returning Joy to Leadville" and Libby James on the pages of ESPN.com.

Do something nice for mom and take her to the races this upcoming weekend. Colorado Race Timing has four races to tell you about for Mother's Day weekend. The inaugural Mother's Day 5K in Highlands Ranch already has 600 registered and is going to be a huge success. One of my favorite races, albeit I'm bias because it's on my home running turf is the High Line Canal 5K & 10K in Centennial. Lastly on Saturday we have the CBPA Earth Day 5K in Golden out at Fairmount Park, which is a really cool park.

On Sunday we have the Mother's Day 5K in Denver's City Park, which treats everyone to an admission to the zoo post race. This race draws over a thousand runners and is always a great time. Check out below for more details and we hope to see you and your mom there.
