After competing in the Olympic Trials Marathon this past January, she set herself up well to make the US World Mountain Running Team for 2012. Unfortunately, she had an off day at the Loon Mountain Race held on July 8th and missed the team, placing 6th Female Overall. This past weekend she made history, winning the Pikes Peak Ascent in 2:24.59, shattering the previous 31 year old record of 2:33.31 set in 1981 by Lynn Bjorklund. For her efforts, she took home an $8,000 prize package and had one of the best performaces of the year in the state of Colorado. Below, we take a brief look into her training and what made the difference for her in 2012.

Last October Brooks launched what has become their highly successful PureProject line. Within the collection of four shoes was one trail shoe, the PureGrit. Weighing in at 8.7 ounces for men and 7.7 ounces for women, the PureGrit joined the ever-growing and highly popular family of less-traditional and less-substantial trail shoes. I found the PureGrit to be a solid addition to that group of shoes.

The PureGrit fit me slightly short in my usual size 10. The width is average and overall there is a great fit throughout the upper. My heel is solidly secure in the back, my midfoot feels great, and my toes have enough room to move around a bit. The NavBand—a piece of elastic stretching over the tongue and attaching among the lace islets—is included throughout the PureProject line. This feature has the ability to accommodate movement and a variety of foot shapes while maintaining a great midfoot fit. The upper is nicely soft; it won’t give you much toe protection out on the trails but it sure does feel nice and if you wanted to wear this shoe without socks you certainly could.
