A friend of mine recently asked my opinion about GPS running watches, as she wanted to buy one for her husband on his birthday. She was looking at the stylish Nike GPS watches. I told her that I knew nothing about the Nike GPS watches, never used one and I don't even know anyone who owns one. I personally have always used Garmins and all of my friends have Garmins. I told her to get a Garmin, why, well because they just work.

Highgear recently sent me their new XT7 Alti-GPS watch for a review. The XT7 retails for $250, which puts it pricewise in the same camp as the Garmin Forerunner 210 or the Garmin Forerunner 410, which has been out for a few years. I have used the Forerunner 410 for the last two years, so my comparison will be to the Forerunner 410. The XT7 does come with a heart rate monitor, which one would have to purchase separately for the Garmin 410 watch, so that is a plus for the XT7.

At the West End 3K, 29 year old Deanna Ardrey of Boulder finished third overall in 10:03, covering the 3K (1.86M) course at 5:23 pace. Deanna is relatively new to running and had an impressive performance last year when she finished 12th overall at the Chicago Marathon, with an Olympic Trials qualifying time.

Thanks to Mizuno and Boulder Running Company, Deanna will pick up a pair of Mizunos for as she is our July runner of the month.

Some of the best mountain runners in the world are about to discover what the Pikes Peak Region’s residents have known for more than a century: There’s gold in them hills.
But they’re going to have to run for it.

Over the past year, the Pikes Peak Marathon, Inc. board of directors has worked to bring more excitement and prestige to the Pikes Peak Marathon on Aug. 19, and its sister race, the popular Pikes Peak Ascent, on Aug. 18. These efforts have come to fruition, and with the support of new race sponsors, prize money has grown significantly in 2012.
"We call the marathon America's Ultimate Challenge," said Pikes Peak Marathon, Inc. president Ron Ilgen. "We should offer prize money befitting an event that is famous on an international and national level. And we think our local running community deserves to host and enjoy these kinds of events. Our prize money structure will help us grow this event in terms of sponsorships and competition."

A month ago I was timing a race in Grand Junction and heard a few families talking about the Scholl family, they weren't even at the race and that made me smile. The family travels hundreds of miles together on the weekends, just to take in a road race with mom, dad and the kids all competing. It's hard not to notice the Scholl family and that's why we did an interview with them two years ago.

Tabor Scholl will be embarking on her sophomore year at West Grand High School in Kremmling and she has already accomplished more in her first year than most girls dream about in four years of high school. I personally am excited to see how her career unfolds, as I know many of the RunColo readers are as well.

The CF Climb for Life at Sports Authority is legit. Last year's race at Peyton Manning Field was won by Chris Baker in 21:19 and Sundara Kuhn in 26:13, contrast that to the Climb the Republic which only takes 6 to 8 minutes for the winners to compete and you can tell that there a lot of stairs to climb at Sports Authority Field.

On Sunday, head out to Arapahoe Fairgrounds for the Silly Pig Mud Run. Use code "LastChance" for $10 off your registration. Last year's race was won by Ian Huff and Erica Koch.

It was a memorable week in Colorado with the theater shooting in Aurora and temps pushing into the 100s with no relief in sight. The racing action slows down in the month of July and although there weren't many races there were a lot of fast runners throwing down some impressive times.

Even though he is a Nebraska Husker's fan the Mizuno/BRC/RunColo runner of the month (June) goes to Tyler Sewald, 30, from Greeley, Colorado.

Tyler's success shows that even if you didn't run in high school and college, that putting in hard work and mileage can lead to success. He had an impressive 2011 and is looking to have a banner 2012. We asked Tyler some important questions about what kind of gun he carries and boring stuff like how many miles he runs per week, read on.

Oh, how I love my Inov-8s, but first I've got to get something off my chest. I recently let a friend demo my X-Lite 150s, he's been running in Newtons for years and let's face we all know Newtons are for triathletes who have way too much disposable income. He tested the X-Lite 150s and loved them, so he headed over to a local running store to pick up a pair.

Now, I don't want to name the store that he went to but it started with Boulder and ended in Company. When he got there he asked for the Inov-8s and the salesperson asked him if he was into CrossFit and when he said no, he/she promptly informed him that Inov-8s are for CrossFit athletes and not runners. They then sold him a pair of New Balance Minimus, it gave me a chuckle to be honest.

Anyway, I finally had to retire my X-Lite 155s after 600+ miles, and four decent sized holes on each side of the forefoot, that and my running partner Tristan was making fun of my shoes that were fit for a vagabond. I picked up a pair of Bare-X 180s and let me tell you these shoes put the minimal in minimalist.
