Another big, big weekend. We'll start with the big stuff up top and work our way down to the less competitive races. With standout performances at a pair of U.S. championships, I'm awarding Performance of the Week honors to Macklin Chaffee for the men and Mattie Suver for the women. ...

Sure it's one of the country's lesser championships, but it still offers a $30k prize purse. And it looks to be Brianne Nelson's time to pick up a U.S. championship. No offense to the rest of the ladies, but Mattie Suver is all that stands in her way. Here are the Colorado athletes, and athletes with Colorado ties, set to compete in Grand Rapids, Mich. this weekend.

Ever since high school, I have been a watch free runner. My coach insisted that stopping your watch at the finish line could mean getting passed at the last second due to lack of concentration. And honestly, I’ve seen that happen a fair amount. Now, for the average post collegiate runner, that probably doesn’t matter much. And especially for the target market of the watch we’re reviewing today, the ultra runner. If you’re like most trail runners, you probably get lost fairly easily. It’s part of the adventure. But, after a few “adventures” that turned into 8 hour, getting lost in the woods and can’t find the trail “adventures”, I knew it was time to find a way to stay safe.

Sure running is great, but travel really gets me going. Put the two together, along with family and a cute little dog, and you've got Justin Ricks' life. Since leaving his job last year, Ricks has been, as cliche as it is, living the dream. Now sponsored by La Sportiva and with a big win at the Moab Red Hot 55k earlier this year, he and his family are in the middle of a six-month road trip that's already taken them to the deep South, the mid Atlantic, and at the date of this writing, to Montana. Read on to see what Ricks, who still calls Pueblo home, has learned so far and about what adventures are ahead.

I'm biased, the High Line Canal is my home running turf, but the High Line Canal 5K & 10K Run is an excellent race and this year it will be held on May 11th. Last year's 10K was won by Tristan Mitchell in 34:35 and Tristan has confirmed that he will be back to defend his title as he prepares for the San Diego Marathon. Debbie Patskowski was the women's champ in 40:52, the 10K had 214 finishers.

The 5K was won by Tim Lankford in 18 flat and Katie Sabey in 19:21, the 5K had 302 finishers. This event is fun for the whole family as there will be bouncy castles and other games for the kids.

Colorado Race Timing is giving away two free entries into the High Line Canal 5K & 10K, with the winners announced on Monday. To win a free entry, first you have to like the Colorado Race Timing Facebook page and then simply like the thread where we mention the free entry giveaway.

Fear the beard, Inov-8s Pete Maksimow is gearing up to race the Greenland Trail 50k this Saturday. Ok, he doesn't even have the beard anymore, but he does rock a sweet handlebar mustache. It's not quite ...

I decided to try out a pair of Inov-8s "heavier shoes", so I picked up the Inov-8 Road-X-Treme 178s. The first thing I noticed was that instead of the typical oversized tongue that I have come to expect with Inov-8 shoes, the 178 has a soft wrap around tongue making it easier to slide your foot into the shoe, Inov-8 calls it the Meta-Cradle.

The upper is comfortable and the shoe is designed to be worn without socks. I can't say that I have tried running sock less, my shoes tend to get smelly as it is and I have little desire to accelerate that process.

With seven races to time this weekend, it's a full schedule for Colorado Race Timing. On Saturday, the Kohl 5K will take place in Broomfield, always a well-organized run and the prize money brings out a fast field. In Sloan's Lake the Mile High 5 will be serving up a 5K and a 5 miler. This weekend is also Cinco De Mayo and the Cinco De Mayo 5K & 15k will be taking place in Highlands Ranch. In Arvada, the Excel-erator 5K will take runners through the streets of Arvada. Finally on Friday evening we will be timing the Light the Night Dam Cancer 5K run at Cherry Creek State Park, so break out your glow sticks!

Sunday we kick things off with the Larkspur 5K, where Denver Bronco's punter Britton Colquitt is scheduled to make an appearance. In Golden, the Fairmount 5000 will take place, FYI they generally give out great prizes for the win but they are not advertised. The Louisville Half Marathon and 10K will take place on a 95% gravel trail and 5% bike path route.
