It seems the only thing growing faster than trail running is the market for lightweight, less-traditional trail shoes. Within that exploding category, New Balance has been a noticeable player. Enter the new 1010 and New Balance might not have become the Lebron James of lightweight, less-traditional trail shoes, but they are certainly near MVP level. Simply put, I found this shoe to be imperfect, but I haven’t fallen in love with a pair of shoes like I have with the 1010 in a long time.

The biggest racing day of the year will be on November 22nd, which just happens to coincide with Thanksgiving. Before you take down the innards of the Turkey, and watch the Houston Texans destroy the Kitty Cats of Detroit, you might as well get your race on. Lets take a look at some of the popular Thanksgiving Day races in the Centennial State.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss, Obama got reelected. The University of Alabama was upset by the Aggies, we found out that General Petraeus and Paula Broadwell are both runners, but apparently the General likes to throw elbows when he runs. A cold front moved into Colorado and it is the second weekend of November.

The Highlands Ranch BackCountry Wilderness Half Marathon is offering up $500 to the top male and female runners! Last year's race had 330 finishers and was won by William Porter in 1:29:11 and Nicole Mahobian in 1:33:42. The forecast for Saturday is calling for a high of 43 degrees, a bit chilly, but perfect for running a half marathon.

The third annual Denver Veteran's Day 5K will take place at Auraria Campus on Saturday. Last year's race was won by Jonathan Huie in 16:49 and Carly Moore in 23:16. The race had 146 finishers and I also see that Ed Perlmutter finished in 39:09.

Both races will be chip timed by Colorado Race Timing, see below for more details.

The show must go on and by show, I mean the New York Marathon. Apparently there are 20 "celebrities" that are running the New York Marathon and I have to confess, I've only heard of about 10% of these so called celebrities.

Even though Jared the Subway Guy isn't running, we can still have a prediction contest. Up for grabs is a $15 gift certificate to Runners Roost for the winner.

Rules - Pick your top three celebrities in order of how you think they will finish. You get 30 points for guessing the winner, 20 points for correctly guessing second place and 10 points for guessing third place. Also, go ahead and toss in their predicted finish time.

Either register with RunColo or even easier, for Facebook members, just log in using the Facebook Connect function at the top of the browser. We can't accept anonymous entrants.

The race is expecting close to 800 runners and with the weather forecast calling for a high of 58 degrees and mostly sunny, it looks like the weather will be perfect.

One of my favorite races that I ran last year was the Hoofin' It Through the Hollows 5K. Yes, I am a bit bias because the race takes place at Goodson Recreation Center and runs on the High Line Canal, aka my home turf. I love evening races and the Hoofin' it Through the Hollows 5K takes place on Saturday at 5:45PM. The sun will be setting and the coyotes on the Canal will be howling!

The Phantom 4 Miler in Loveland, is in its second year and last year's race was well organized and fun. The race had 256 finishers and was won by Brian Erb in 22:01 and Amanda Cunningham in 27:07. After the race, enjoy the Bone Chilling Breakfast last year it was one of the top breakfast spreads that I have ever seen at a race.

After putting 400+ miles on my Vibram Classics, it was time for a replacement, besides they stunk pretty bad. I decided to pick up a new pair of Vibrams, so I went with the Vibram Bikila. The shoe is named after Abebe Bikila an Ethiopian who won the Olympic marathon in Rome, in 1960 running barefoot.

When Vibram started making their FiveFinger shoes they had four options, now there are numerous options, in fact I think they are too many options and it's a tad confusing. They have FiveFingers for casual, fitness, multi-use, outdoor, water-sport and running. In the running category alone they now have eight options.
