Many of the usual suspects head to Atlanta this week to race the Peachtree 10k on the fourth of July. Colorado entrants, where the women look to be more competitive than the men, highlighted below.

It's time to celebrate the defeat of the Redcoats, some 237 years ago and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. While fireworks have been discouraged or outlawed in Colorado, racing has not. In fact, the Fourth of July is the second biggest racing day of the year, next to Thanksgiving Day.

In Louisville, you can check out the Let Freedom Run 5K & 10K, dress up as your favorite American superhero and all participants get a tech shirt. Down in Highlands Ranch, the Independence Day 5K will be taking place. Last year's race was won by Bridget Tschappat in 19:47 and Keifer Johnson in 16:36, the race had 627 finishers. In Evergreen we have the Freedom Run 5K, last year's race was won by Carson Aberle in 17:02 and Brooke Kish in 18 flat.

As I've said before, I find the tv show "Shark Tank" really interesting and enjoyable. Entrepreneurs go on the show and pitch investment in their company/product to a team of would-be investors (i.e., 10% of my company in exchange for $100k, and with that $100k investment we'll market product X and make a lot of money). With the rise of crowdsourcing, there are a lot of potential running-related products, films, and personal appeals seeking investment, some charitable, some for-profit. Interested to see what's out there, I took a look and shot down three for investment below. Would you contribute to any of these three?

It's the final week of June and the second week of summer and Colorado Race Timing has a few races to tell you about. If you haven't been out to the Wild Animal Sanctuary, here's your chance, they are hosting their first ever Run Into the Wild 5K. The race already has over 500 registered runners, looks like a good one.

We also have the first annual Murphy Creek 5K in Aurora and if you like to climb stairs, check out the CF Climb for Life at Sports Authority Field, both races on June 29th.

Led by some amazing racing at the U.S. Track and Field Championships, it was another banner weekend of racing for Colorado athletes. We've got it all covered, everything from the prelims to the finals of the T&F championships, and then everything from Rock 'n' Roll Seattle to the Grandma's Marathon, and of course all of the local racing action. Performance of the week goes to Tyler McCandless and Adriana Nelson for their exceptional races at the U.S. Half Marathon Championships.

With handhelds, belts, vests, and packs, there are plenty of options to carry water on your run. They all really do have a place and need though, even the newest entrant into this market - Orange Mud's HydraQuiver pack. They've got a different take on hydration, something I don't believe offered by any of their competitors. And as cool as their first pack, their second version, just now available, has me more interested.

Adriana Nelson built a 30-45 second lead early in the race and held on for a seven second win over Olympic marathoner Desiree Davila. Nelson finished in 1:11:19 and the win marked her first U.S. title. Her PR for the distance is 1:09:59, dating to 2005 in the Netherlands.

In the men's race, Boulder's Tyler McCandless had a huge breakthrough. Finishing in 1:03:16 for 11th, he was way, way under his previous PR of 1:04:59. McCandless was just six seconds back of seventh place.

Deeper results for Colorado runners follow.

Elise Cranny of Niwot is one of the top high school runners in the country, and she recently capped off her junior year in track where she won the state title in the 800m, 1600m and the 3200m. Her success in track was coming off an impressive cross country season where she defeated Katie Rainsberger by a tenth of a second, to win the state 4A cross country title, in dramatic fashion.

Elise was kind enough to answer a few questions from RunColo, read on.

Wildfires tragically dominated Colorado this week, but the weekend's racing was hardly muted. The fastest road action was in Colorado Springs, but that was just a small part of a weekend that included a trio of Father's Day races, trail and uphill racing, the Estes Park Marathon, and the usual spate of local 5Ks. Performance of the week goes to Scott Dahlberg and Laura Haefeli.

We'd just introduced one new Colorado running store, and it's time for another (and possibly another and another if rumors prove true). Vertical Runner, a small chain of three stores in northeastern Ohio with a slant towards trail running, put up the Vertical Runner of Breckenridge Facebook page today. In seven hours it's collected 69 likes. At 9,600 feet, it's being dubbed "America's Highest Running Store."

My running career spans back to 1992 when I was a freshman in high school. I've been running competitively ever since, with a few years off post college when I took up weight lifting and recreational basketball. However, over those 21 years, I've had almost every common running injury that runners tend to have. One thing that frustrates me about doctors, sports therapist or massage therapist that don't understand runners is that they will almost always tell you to stop running, it's the safe answer. Lets be honest though, there are a lot of running injuries that simply go away on their own, I have had several of these but I've also had injuries where I kept running and made it worse, that's my situation right now and it's hard to know the difference.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I'm really interested in this. I'm not rooting for anyone in particular, but I'm just really eager to see what happens in the local running retail space in the next few years. Does the Gart model work, and how does it affect other local running retailers? How will the other area stores respond, if at all? Where will Gart open other stores, and will they be Boulder Running Company stores or Denver Running Company stores? Will Gart open a store in Arvada or Stapleton before someone else?

In search of the future of Gart's Running Specialty Group, I looked to the past and although I of course don't have any answers, will share some thoughts.

A record setting 99 degree day definitely gets you in the mood to race a 5K right? Fortunately the weather will cool off a touch by the weekend with highs in the upper 80's. Colorado Race Timing will be up in Aspen, cooling off and timing the Food & Wine Classic 5K on Friday.

On Saturday, check out the Peru 5K & 10K up in Thornton. Sunday is Father's Day, so treat dad to a 5K and check out the Father's Day 5K in Arvada, great fast and flat course.
