While the 10K is the state championship, the event also includes a 5K. Both races wind downhill with a finish near Evergreen Lake. The significantly downhill course is one of the fastest races in the state. Jason Hubbard ran 14:07 in the 5K in 1998, still the fastest 5K ever run in Colorado.
Last year’s race was won by Evergreen master Bob Weiner in 32:07. Peter Vail (32:14) and Paul Digrappa (32:27) were second and third. Boulder’s Jennifer Valentine nipped Runner’s Roost’s Heather Utrata for the win in the women’s race – 38:25 to 38:26. Denver’s Jody Legg was third in 40:26.
Prize money is largely a result a sponsorships, and for that, thanks to the race’s sponsor Flight for Life. Runners will again need to be USATF Colorado members to be prize-money eligible.
Reflecting back on the first race, USATF Colorado wishes to again thank the Stadium Stampede 5K, their race director and committee, and title sponsor Wells Fargo for their efforts in supporting Colorado runners.
