• Fast and Flurry-ous is FAST, and Other Colorado Race Results for 1/28/12

    The Yeti Chase, Fast and Flurry-ous, and the Pikes Peak Road Runners Winter Series #2 race all hosted competitive fields in Lakewood, Boulder, and Colorado Springs this morning. With guys like Kenny Foster, Matt Tebo, and Ryan Hafer joined by women like Adriana and Brianne Nelson, fast times were produced up and down the Front Range. Here's the day's highlights.

    Yeti Chase 5K and 10K - Lakewood

    5 seconds separated the top-3 men in the 5K. Boulder's Steve Johnson clocked a 16:52 for the win. In a kick for second, BRC-DTC's Scott Schrader nipped 11-year-old Tyler Scholl, 16:56 to 16:57. With Runner's Roost's Josh Wright (17:08), Team Moosepart's Eric Garber (17:31), and Fleet Feet's Matt Nolen (17:31) all trailing, Scholl collected several scalps.

    Two weeks after running 2:42:58 at the Olympic trials marathon, Fort Collins' Brianne Nelson won the women's 5K in 17:45. Colorado Springs' Christie Foster was 2nd in 18:25 and 15-year-old Li Downs was third in 21:09. The 5K had 357 finishers.

    Colorado Springs' Kenny Foster topped the men's 10K in 33:28, almost a minute up on his closest challenger. Parker's Frank Therrian (34:25) outdueled Laramie's Ragan Driver (34:39) for second. The 10K paid $150, $100, and $50 to the top-3 men and women.

    Runner's Roost's Heather Utrata pushed her 2012 win streak to two with a 38:28 victory, 43 seconds faster than she ran here a year ago. Lakewood's Carrie Zografos made it a close race with a 38:52 runner-up effort. Parker's Kris Klotzbach took third in 41:25. The 10K had 307 finishers.

    Pikes Peak Road Runners Winter Series #2 - Colorado Springs

    In the 8-mile race, BRC's Ryan Hafer ran 42:33 to take 87 seconds off Justin Ricks' 2009 course record. Hafer was all alone up front with Inov-8's Tommy Manning (45:42) a distant second. Scott Spillman was third in 46:14. Stephanie Meredith (Colorado Springs) won the women's race in 53:28.

    The accompanying 4-mile race went to James Burns (Colorado Springs) in 20:33, a new age group mark. He took down runner-up Pat McGuire (21:09) and third-place Logan Wealing (21:11), along with professional triathlete Michael Weiss (21:32) and mountain runner Simon Gutierrez (22:44). 13-year-old Katie Rainsberger won the women's race in 25:04, also a new age group record.

    Fast and Flurry-ous 4-mile Cross Country - Boulder

    Boulder Track Club's Laura Thweatt dominated the women's race with a 22:24 run on the tough cross country course. Fort Collins Adriana Nelson bounced back from the Olympic trials marathon witha 23:04 runner-up effort. Boulder's Melody Fairchild took third in 23:22.

    The U.S. Army's John Mickowski stole the show in the BRC-BTC duel, winning the race in 19:49. CU's Christian Thompson was second in 19:50 and Boulder Track Club's Matt Tebo third in 19:57. The deep field saw Clint Wells (20:10), Loren Ahonen (20:16), Josh Glaab (20:27), Curtis Begley (20:28), Chris Mulvany (20:41), Adam Rich (20:48), and Robby Young (20:49) round out the top-10.

    In the battle between the Boulder Track Club and Boulder Running Company / adidas, the BTC men reportedly won the men's race, the BRC women the women's race, and combined, BRC took the overall win.

    The highly-competitive race dished out money five-deep, going $500, $400, $300, $200, and $100.
