• Colorado Racing Results for 2/4/12-2/5/12

    First a few links to share - A second showing of Unbreakable, the 2010 Western States 100 movie, was announced for Feb. 10th in Boulder. Haulin' Ass, a documentary about burro racing, became available for purchase. And legendary CU coach Jerry Quiller passed away. On the racing front, Tyler McCandless was back in action three weeks after the Olympic trials marathon. Jenny Simpson kicked off her indoor track campaign. And Heather Utrata just keeps on winning. The first week of February 2012 has passed, and here's the quick-hit racing highlights.

    Double Bridge Run 15K - Pensacola, Flor.

    Three weeks after the Olympic trials marathon, Boulder's Tyler McCandless raced to a fifth-place 49:17. On a windy day that depressed finish times, McCandless was the race's first American finisher. Reuben Mwei, an Adams State alum now living in Georgia, won the race in 46:51.

    New Balance Indoor Grand Prix - Boston

    Monument's Jenny Simpson ran 8:58.70 in the 3000m. After running in the lead pack through half, she faded to last of the seven finishers in her first race of the season. Air Force alum Justin Tyner ran 8:02 in the men's 3000m, also finishing at the back of the pack.

    Rocky Raccoon 100 - Huntsville, Tex.

    Brooks Williams (Colorado Springs) ran to an impressive 14:58 fourth-place finish. Runner's Roost's Dan Vega and Seth Kelly ran 19:13 and 19:45. Lafayette's David Clark finished in 20:59.



    Super Half Marathon - Colo. Springs

    The inaugural event brought 367 runners out, none faster than 25-year-old Scott Spillman. With the top-7 runners all from Colo. Springs, Spillman ran 1:17:35. BRC's Cody Hill and Runner's Roost's Gerald Romero ran 1:18:32 and 1:22:32 for second and third. A tightly-packed first four women were led by Olivia Long (Colo. Springs) in 1:30:14. Fellow Colo. Springs runners Stephanie Meredith and Connilee Walter came home in 1:31:05 and 1:31:31 to round out the women's podium.

    Super Bowl 5K - Denver

    Runner's Roost's Heather Utrata won her third straight race to start 2012, finishing in 18:32. The only two to finish ahead of her, Russell Stein and Doug Croft ran 16:59 and 18:31.

    Sunday Bloody Sunday 5K - Highlands Ranch

    In the traditional 5K, Stephen Geisler and Teresa Henley raced to 18:20 and 23:37 winning times. The race had 131 finishers. The event also offered an obstacle course style race. With 130 finishers in that race, Andy Palmer and Cynthia Coors finished first in 31:43 and 38:40, respectively.

    SnowDash 5K - Idaho Springs

    332 competitors raced the rare winter obstacle course on a 50" base at Echo Mountain. Limited to just one mile, Christopher Westerman (10:34) and Ashley Westcott (14:05) led all comers through the maze.

    Univ. of New Mexico Collegiate Classic Indoor Track - Abq.

    On Friday in the 5000m, Western State's Ian Butler ran 15:12 for second. Just behind, Mike English of UCCS was third in 15:25. In the women's race, Adams' Vivian Ochoa was fifth in 18:34.

    On Saturday, Mines' Russell Drummond was second in the mile in 4:12. Western's Lauren Kleppin, Sophie McNeeley, and Sarah Lyle went 2-3-4 in the women's race, running 5:01, 5:02, and 5:02, respectively.

    Western's Gabe Proctor dominated the men's 3000m in 8:25, a seven-second win over teammate Trevor Blackman. Kleppin doubled back in the 3000m to win in 9:53, a 34-second trouncing of the rest of the field.
