• Colorado Racing Preview - 4/24 to 4/25

If you're not participating in the Rocky Mountain Pinball Showdown, testing your knowledge at the Harry Potter Quiz or watching the Colorado Firefighter Calendar Judging Contest, there are some big races this weekend. Colorado's fastest will have the opportunity to earn some money this weekend, here is a breakdown of this weekends racing action:

Pueblo to Pueblo Run 11M/10k/2M The Pueblo to Pueblo race starts in Cortez, as runners are bused to the race start. The top three overall male and female winners in each race will receive awards valued from $30.00 to $100.00.

    Sierra's Race Against Meningitis 5K
The third annual Sierra's Race is one of the largest 5Ks in Colorado. Last year the race had 1,055 finishers, with Kelly Christensen taking the win in 16:24 and Abby Depperschmidt winning for the ladies in 19:25. However, I guarantee the course records will be broken this year. The race is offering up a cash prize for the overall male/female winner, in addition they will receive $100 if they break the course records, see website for details. Lastly, if the Colorado 5k record is broken, 14:07 (Male), 16:12 (Female) runners will receive an additional $200.

If anyone knows who set the Colorado 5k record and where, drop a line in the comments, I'm curious. The Sierra's 5k course is not certified.

    Boulder Distance Carnival 15K/5K

The Boulder Distance Carnival features a 5k and a 15k, with both races taking place at the Boulder Reservoir. Cash prizes are up for grabs; the winners of the 15k will receive $300 and the winners of the 5k takes home $150. Last year the 5k was won by Aric Holmes in 16:19 and Sydney Laws in 19:08. The 15k was not an option last year, instead a 10k was run, with Jason Simpson taking top honors in 33:42 and Uli Bromme in 38:46.

    Cherry Creek Sneak

The Cherry Creek Sneak is the largest five mile race in the country and also offers up a 5k and a mile run for the youngsters. The Sneak offers up some great competition simply due to the size of the race, however I believe that the race does not pay out any cash to the winners, thus the field is a bit "soft" and not as competitive as one would think for a race with 10,000 participants. Last year the 5m was won by Andrew Smith in 26:13 and Sarah Shepard in 29:23.

14:07 @ Evergreen Town Race in 1999 by Jason Hubbard is the mark the organizers are using as Colorado 5K Road Race record. Obviously, this is an aided 5k. But Jason Hubbard was a great runner, especially at altitude.

Probably a more accurate record was Richard Kiplaget's 14:24 win at the CTC Corporate Challenge in Broomfield in 2006. This was and is a difficult criterium course.

Steve thanks for the correction, I was looking at the results from 2008. I corrected it in the text to eliminate confusion.

Seems a bit unfair to even recognize a record from Evergreen, as the USATF would say that course is not record eligible. I know Simon Cheprot ran a 14:34 at the Stadium Stampede last year and figured that had to have been one of the fastest times for 2009 at least.
