* I emailed Luke Crespin before the race on Saturday to see if he was racing, but he informed me he was running Greenland. Thus going to the race, thought I made have a chance to take the victory. At the start line I didn't recognize anyone, but there were a few young guys who looked fast. A half mile into the race there were 6 to 7 guys all running in a pack, running 5:46 pace downhill and not to sound cocky but at that point I figured I could win the race. Right before mile one, it was me and two other guys and both were breathing rather loud. I dropped the hammer right before the first mile marker and neither one of them responded.
The course was run on a concrete bike path for the most part and was really hilly, with those short steep hills that you find on bike paths. I was hoping to run sub 18 on Saturday, but with a mile to go in the race I sort of put it on cruise control, knowing the victory was in hand. The odd thing is I can push in marathons/half marathons without competition, but if I don't have competition in a 5k, I struggle. I think in part it's because it's a different kind of pain, a marathon is a grind, while a 5k you're running at VO2 max and it's hard to run at that level unless you are 100% into the race.
* Five weeks to go until San Diego Marathon. Weighed myself at 162lbs this week, not good. I need to improve the diet this month, get down to 156lbs at the minimum, which is where I was at NYC Marathon.
* Running Colfax Half Marathon. We are also moving that week, so it will be really hectic, but a half marathon is what I need right now and with the 6:30am start I can get the race done and get on with the moving.
