| Nathan Speed 4 Review: While perusing my local Runners Roost I stopped to examine their fuel/hydration belts. The Nathan Speed 4 caught my eye so I asked the salesman his opinion on the Nathan Speed 4. He told me he felt the Nathan Belt was superior to the Fuel Belt and/or Amphipod Belt. The first hydration belt I purchased was the Amphipod 2+ which featured two 10.5 ounce water bottles. The Amphipod belt uses a "snap in" feature locking the bottles in place. I never cared for this design and while running I ended up loosing two bottles on two separate occasions when I thought the bottles were snapped in; they were not. I could never get a comfortable fit with the belt and after a substantial time running, the belt would dig into my side. I eventually grew tired with the Amphipod and decided to purchase a Fuel Belt Endurance 4. Fuel Belt is the leader in the industry and I figured I could not go wrong with a brand name item. I purchased the Endurance 4 model with four water bottles each one capable of carrying 8.5 ounces. The fuel belt was comfortable, but I never found it easy to get the bottles back into the elastic holder while on the run. That's what caught my eye about the Nathan Speed 4. Instead of using an elastic material to hold the bottle they use a hard plastic cage. This makes sticking the bottles into the cage a snap while running. The belt also features two pockets. One mesh pocket in the back which can carry several items and another small zipper pocket in the front for holding a key. I've also found the Nathan belt to be the most comfortable of the three belts that I have tried. Another advantage is that the bottles are 10 ounces, giving you the option of carrying up to forty ounces of fluid. I like the option of four separate bottles as I adjust the number of bottles that I carry based on the heat, how far I am running, etc. In conclusion, I recommend the Nathan Speed 4. It has a fantastic fit, it's comfortable and it's easy to place the bottles back in the plastic cage without breaking stride. |
